Therapy for older adults

Are you feeling less joy or less engaged with your life? Does it feel as if your connection to your partner has lost its sparkle and meaning? Are you dealing with the pain of loss and having difficulty managing your grief?

These are common experiences for people as they move into their 50’s, 60’s and beyond. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can bring new meaning and joy to your life and relationships. You can move through your grief. And discover who you want to be as you move into this next phase of your life.

Why a therapist who specializes in older adults?

Just as kids and adolescents need to see a therapist who specializes in that time of life, older adults and seniors need a therapist who understands the changes that come with aging. I’m 67 years old. I currently have clients in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even their 90’s. I understand the joys of aging, as well as the challenges and struggles.

Is it sadness or depression?

We live in a world where there’s no room for the feelings and experiences that come with aging. So, it’s not a surprise that many of my clients come to me feeling sad, anxious, disconnected, and with a sense that they’ve lost their purpose in life.

Counselors and psychiatrists often diagnosed these feelings as depression. But I believe, rather than depression, this may be a deep sadness that comes from losing a sense of meaning and connection to your life as you age. The cure is not medication, but finding what’s important to you in the life you have today.

Counseling for older couples

Mature relationships are often in need of a renewed sense of purpose and connection. All the things that brought you togehter as a couple, and kept your marriage together, are changing. You can’t solve that just by scheduling a few more “date nights”. Marriage counseling and couples counseling is designed to help you re-engage with your partner and find more joy and connection.

I utilize EFT or Emotionally Focused Thearpy for Couples as my primary modality when working with couples. I like EFT because it focuses on getting couples out of that repetitive cycle of conflicts and resentments. Emotionally Focused Therapy works to reconnect couples and rebuild that deep connection you had when you first came together.
